First Class forTeaching English

I was surprised to see so many signed up for a summer class, my other ones only have like 4 or 5 other people in them. I was also glad to see so many familiar names that I have met along this journey to our certification. I felt like our first night was very informative. We went straight into how we need to do our lesson and unit plans and I thought that was great. I was a little sad that we had to actually do the 100 questions this time because that last class I took with Dr. Steffes we only had to do 10 :(. Honestly, we had so much information going on I think we needed longer than 3 hrs to cover it. I also liked how Dr. Steffes changed it up a little to where we are all responsible for having our lessons done on the same day and then it’s a surprise who gets to present each time. I think that will keep it interesting, like a game of chance or the Hunger Games haha. What else did you guys like from our first class?

Ok so most of you know me already and I’m not sure who is in my group yet, I will provide you with two truths and one lie about myself, May the odds be ever in your favor haha.

1)     I am an only child.

2)     I am married and have a 3- year old daughter.

3)     Before going back to school, I worked as a surgical technologist for 11 years.

P.S. Dr. Steffes I get to observe one of your old students this session for teaching math :) Casey Dickey!!

  1. Hi Carmen! I'm glad we got to be in the same group. I was surprised at how many people are in this class, too. I look forward to working with you! I am going to guess that your lie is that you are an only child. Am I right?

    1. I love Casey too, she’s awesome! I had the privilege of subbing as a para in her room several times this past school year and I am thankful for the opportunity to learn from her over the summer.

  3. Hahaha! I love the Hunger Games references throughout your post. Good movie! I’m glad to see some familiar names, too. I know you and I have had a few classes together throughout this journey. I’m not going to lie, I am almost burnt out writing these lesson plans. Most of my courses the past 6+ months have included a unit plan, which is great but tiring. I tend to overthink and overanalyze these lesson plans while I’m writing them up. I’m also notorious for procrastinating. I’m the type that works best under pressure. I think it helps me make decisions because I don’t have time to overthink it...does that make sense? The fact that I’m a procrastinating perfectionist stresses me out more. This is my last course that I’ll have to write lesson plans for, so I need to finish strong. Do you have a plan for your unit plan yet? Have you started? If so, I’m jealous. :)

I think your lie is that you’re an only child.

  4. Hey Carman!!
So i will have to admit, I am one of those few people that has never see Hungary Games, so i didn't get your reference, but I'm sure it was a great one ;-) I mentioned this before but I will say it again, it is so nice to have so many people that have had Dr. Steffes as a teacher and feel positive things about how they see this class going!!! II'm supper stress about the class but hearing all the positive comments help!! Omg I dont know if its a lie or not but if it is not then im so jealous that you were a surgical technologist!! I think that would be so much fun!!!
Thank you for sharing with us!!

  5. Carman,
I enjoyed reading your post! I too am glad we have so many of the same faces/names in class; it helps so much when it comes to needing to get through the difficult portions. I do have to go back through to check on the future assignments so I am not as lost....the 100 questions is throwing me off but I am sure we will get through it all! Great thoughts!
