Personal Narrative

Well in thinking about how I would give you a run down of what I was like as an elementary student and explain that in three paragraphs has proven harder than I thought it would be. I decided I would share a little about each topic we could choose from instead. I will start with what I was like as an elementary student and then share a few stories of things that didn't go my way. I was the kind of student that was excited about going to school. I loved, well I still love shopping for school supplies haha! I like summer of course, because what kid doesn't love sleeping in and swimming all the time! I also couldn't wait to get back to school to meet my new teachers and spend time with friends I didn't get to see over summer break.

I would say I was an average student as far as my grades were concerned, I maintained, well in that time Satisfactory scores then when it shifted to letter grades I maintained A's and B's. I enjoyed anytime we did science experiments in class or anything science related. I love science! I hated math time because it was focused on memorization and timed tests, which they say is a bad way to teach math now, go figure! I couldn't rationalize why we were doing what we were doing as far as math and I think that's why I hated it so much. I loved all of my teachers except for one, my kindergarten teacher. She was very old school and children were to be seen not heard in her class :(. My first grade teacher was the complete opposite and because of her caring and sweet nature, I had decided in first grade that I was going to be a teacher just like her one day. I've taken a round about way of getting back to what I always wanted to do, but hey, It's never too late to do something you love right!

Ok now the fun stories, I shared in class that one thing that didn't go my way was my 7th birthday party. I had been told we were going to go swimming at a water park and in all actuality we were going to Chuck- E- Cheese in St. Louis. I remember asking my mom how come we didn't bring our swimming suits if we were going to a water park, and she said we were going to get them at the water park. When we pulled up to Chuck-E-Cheese instead of a water park I was furious. My friends had all known where we were really going and played along, since it was a surprise party. To this day, I hate surprises and my mom never threw me another surprise party :0.

Another thing that didn't go my way would have to be the day I gave birth to my daughter, or I should say the day before ;). I went in bright and early to be induced because she was getting too big for my short self. They hook me up to everything and get the process started, well my daughter is pretty stubborn and was very comfortable where she was so they ended up having to try all kinds of things to get her to come out. I thought going in I would be having her that day, maybe a maximum of 6 hours but no 23 and 1/2 hours later, 1 minute after my work alarm went off (I forgot to turn it off) she came out! 3 years later she is still very strong willed but I can't fault her because she gets it from me ;).

  1. Carman,
I enjoyed reading your blog post! I do not remember much of my elementary school days but I am so glad you were able to have a teacher who inspired you to teach. I too would have been upset with my mom if she surprised me too like your mom did. Also, I did not even think about the birth of my children, they are on their own program when it comes to birth and they keep up the stubbornness as they grow! Great thoughts!

  2. Carman,

That was a fun read, ha! I think I missed the assignment this week, due to my internet issues during class, dang it. But thanks for sharing so well and keeping me guessing. Yeah.... your labor story amazes me, because I had my first child in 7-9 hours, and my second in 3 hours from the time we got to the hospital and really started laboring. And the 3 hour labor was worse in most ways, yeah nothing about my second daughters labor and birth went my way, haha. I ended up hemorrhaging pretty bad and causing the doctor and nurses quite a bit of concern, being administered pitocin post delivery which was awful, to try to stop the bleeding.... In the end I was ok and my little baby girls couldn't be more perfect. ;)

And that's terrible about Chucky Cheese, haha!

  3. Carman, thanks for keeping me well entertained with your post! Haha! I can relate to having a strong-willed daughter. Mine was just the opposite, though. She decided she wanted out immediately and I had to be rushed to emergency surgery because she was breach. She's still impatient to this day! LOL

  4. Isn't it crazy how different our teachers were vs how we are being taught to be as teachers today? It's almost like a night and day difference. I remember my teachers instructing us by lectures majority of the time and were strict. This post was entertaining. I thought your story about your surprise party was funny. I can see why you'd be upset, haha!

  5. Carman, the surprise thing is so funny! I would have completely been upset too. Chuck E Cheese and waterparks are not the same! We are very similar when it comes to the shopping thing haha, and felt the same about our teachers. We had similar experiences about wanting to become teachers too-except I wanted to be one and then lost my will to be one in high school. Then, I started the A+ program in high school and found my love for teaching all over again! I'm so glad you stuck with it too!
